i. Women in Informal Employment: Globalising and organising (WEIGO) Waste Pickers’ Mapping

CPI has also greatly contributed to understanding and supporting the underprivileged waste picking community in Pakistan. In the Mapping of Waste Pickers project, we helped quantify and map waste pickers across several big cities in Pakistan. The project aimed to develop a fundamental understanding of the waste pickers’ socio-economic conditions, their contributions to the circular economy in Pakistan, and the challenges they faced. By supporting these unsung heroes, the project provided opportunities for improvement and empowerment in the informal workforce sector, ultimately contributing to a more efficient and sustainable waste management system in Pakistan.

Shoreline Waste Audit on Marine Debris in Mubarak Village Karachi Study by CPI at KSBL – Factsheet

ii. Scoping Study for Waste Assessment along the Coast of Karachi

Realizing the surge in marine plastic pollution in Pakistan, KSBL through Circular Plastic Institute conducted a scoping study of 3 selected sites on the coast of Karachi, namely 1) Fish Harbour West Wharf (Kalapani); 2) Kemari Fishing Jetty; and 3) Manora Channel (KPT Workshop). The aim of this study was to assess the sources and characterization of the waste which ends up at these selected sites.

Mapping of Open Burning of Municipal Waste in Pakistan and Identification of Underlying Factors and Key Drivers:
In the open burning – a Safer End Engineered grant- project, we aim to investigate the connection between open burning incidents and social vulnerabilities, while mapping hotspot regions, and assessing at-risk communities to establish sustainable waste management practices. Our integrated approach combines city-level spatial and hotspot mapping, transect walk approaches, and site visits to transfer stations and landfill and dump sites. By utilising some key analytical tools like Hybrid Single Particle Lagrangian Integrated Trajectory (HYSPLIT) model, surveys, and key informant interviews, we identified open burning areas, sources, substances, and the underlying factors driving this issue.

Value Chain Mapping and Capacity Building of Pakistani Government Stakeholders to Implement Basel Convention’s Amendments to Enhance Control of the Transboundary Movements of Plastic Waste

CPI’s project investigated the socio-economic and political aspects influencing the implementation of the Basel Convention’s amendments, with the aim to bolster the capacity of Pakistan’s government and stakeholders in managing transboundary plastic waste movement. Utilizing a mixed-methods approach, the project assesses value chains, social networks, and policy alignment to build a database which will help in bringing future regulatory reforms related to the movement of plastic waste and develop a strong policy action plan for implementing the Basel Amendments.

Lifecycle Assessment of Polyvinyl Chloride (PVC) Products
For the project, CPI conducted a Lifecycle Assessment (LCA) of four major vinyl products made from PVC material. The study was essential as it provided industries and other key players with valuable insights and recommendations regarding the products' performances and socio-environmental impacts throughout their lifecycles. This project exemplifies CPI’s commitment to driving positive change and fostering informed decision-making within the industry.
